Preparing low carb meals couldn’t be any easier today because most supermarkets cater to the very busy cook. Many offer prepared meals, rotisserie meats, and as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can fit in your cart. These supermarkets are your best friend if you are on a low carb diet because most people will quit if the process is too difficult. When people get home from work, the last thing they want to do is spend hours over a hot stove. They want to spend a few minutes and prepare a gourmet low carb meal with a minimum of effort.
Of course, you can’t go to your local supermarket deli and buy whatever they have. Many of the offerings are by no means low carb. Instead they are fried or cooked in grease. Usually, the meat and three veggie window is full of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and greasy vegetables. It is usually best to forego this route. If they have turnips or green beans, ask how they were cooked. If they don’t use meat or fat, these are great choices. The salad choices in the deli counter are pretty much mayonnaise salads. Every once and a while, they might have a Cole slaw made with vinegar with no sweet pickles. This slaw is a great side dish. Many deli stores offer green salads or Caesar salads. As long as you can choose a light or low carb salad dressing, salads are perfect choices.
The rotisserie meats are wonderful choices for your low carb diet. Some of the selections are excellent choices. The turkey and chicken are perfect lean meat choices. If you really enjoy these meats, buy extra so you can use them later on in the week. The turkey makes a great chicken salad. Be sure to use light mayonnaise or low carb mayonnaise which is even better. Eaten cold or hot these entrees are sure to please even your non-dieting family. You can also avail yourself of the seafood section’s steaming option. You can buy lobster, crabs, or shrimp and the store will steam them for you. They will even add spicy seasonings for you if you wish. Add a nice salad and you are on your way to a great low carb meal.
Don’t forget the fruit and vegetable sections. Most any stores have fresh fruit already cleaned, chopped, and ready to eat. Many have mixtures of different types of fruit. Still another choice is the fruit smoothie mixes. The directions are on the container. These smoothies are wonderful choices for breakfast as long as you use skim milk and no extra sugar. Another choice is to put a variety of fruit in a bowl and serve. Portion control if very important. You can’t eat everything. About a cup or a cup and a half are good portions. Don’t add sugar; you can learn to love fruit without extra sugar.
Salads and veggies are everywhere. They are already washed and ready to cook. Some frozen vegetables are already in a container ready for steaming. You can’t get food easier than that. If you don’t have a steamer, indulge yourself in a new one. Simply put some water in the bottom of the steamer, put the mixed vegetables in the steamer, and cook them on high in the microwave. Viola. You are ready for a great low carb meal. You can have the chicken, the mixed fruit, and your steamed vegetables. Don’t overindulge; you might have leftovers for the next day.
Limit your intake of fruits but you can pretty much indulge yourself in green vegetables. Let’s be honest though. Do you know anyone who has ever splurged with broccoli? Make your low carb diet as easy as possible and you will stay on it and lose the weight you have always wanted to lose.
